Day 12 Sept 7
Day just about warm not too warm and not too cool. So starting out I wore my jacket and Dianne wore both of her’s. Later after arriving at the hotel we did a short ride to the museum and did need them for that. So overall almost a perfect day weather wise.
The route plan was to bike to Richardson ND but the hotel was small and town did not have a restaurant so we cut the miles back and stopped at the bigger town of Dickerson. Basically the route followed I94 with us bouncing on. it whenever old route 10 was not there. Total distance only 80 miles but with great scenery. We passed though Beach (not much there except a travel plaza and an old abandoned motel and one new one). Then to Sentinel Butte with even less a sign for the trail of Custer and some fossilized stumps. Through Medora and stop the Roosevelt Painted canyon visitor center. Then a ride into Dickerson ND.
The stop at the Painted Canyon visitor center is well worth the time the views are spectacular. The short history of Teddy Roosevelt was also good. Turns out he come out here to regroup after his first wife die after child brith. Stayed a couple of years and then went back east remarried and became our 26th president. We have him to thank for the National parks we see today.
After arriving in Dickerson we took off to the dinosaur Museum in Dickerson. A much more jazzy presentation than at Jordan showing both, rocks, minerals, history and Dinosaurs. I would recommend this little gem to all who are close by.
Dickerson was visited by Lewis and Clark in 1805 before it really got started. Then it was in 1870 it was the furtherest west you could go on train. This is where Teddy got off and rode the rest of his way to Elk Horn ranch that he owned. It was this train connection that really kept Dickerson going though the years. It was homesteaded by Russians, Germans, Polish, and Swedish people and farming was always key to the area.
Other interesting notes:
- Picture of Teddy in front of horse with pistols on and eye glasses make him look kind of nerdy
- Had one car pass me and then cut me off to turn right in front of me. I almost hit him in the side.
- Saw only 7 cars on the side roads today so very light traffic
- Saw my first field of corn today for this trip. I expected to see a lot of crops in Montana but all I saw was cows and hay
- Fossilized stumps were found 70 ft under ground

Pretty for sure you both look like you are having a great time 💕
