Day 14 Sept 10
Pretty sure this is getting repetitive but it chilly almost cold here these days. It was 52 degrees when we loaded the scooters and started out. As it was cloudy all morning it was cool ride.
We left the bike trail today to a Hwy route and hence avoided 11 miles of gravel roads. We left Mobridge, on Hwy 12 then turned south on Hwy 83 and remained on that the rest of the way. Miles rides today was 109. Passing though the small towns of Shelby and Odella to reach Fort Pierre just before 2pm.
The historic markers are getting pretty boring even for me. The first one was about a South Dakota family that had a father governor followed a few elections later by his son. Both grew up in Shelby. Then the second of note was the old center of Shelby county with nothing but a wheat field behind it.
After into the hotel we took for a quick tour and saw the Casey Tibbs Rodeo museum. Having never spent time watching a rodeo I found it interesting. Tibbs was born in 1906 and was grand champion in Rodeo 6 time which is really good I guess. He also started as trick rider, stunt man and actor is several movies after his rodeo day were over. I one exhibit he claimed to have broken every rib once and many twice having broken 46 bones in his career. I also learned that the rodeo was the sport to welcome women competitors.
After the museum we saw we were close to Verensdyre Plate Monument as I had never heard of it before. Turns out is was lead plate buried in 1743 by an exploration party lead by Verensdyre, sent out of Quebec claiming the area as part of France Canada. They were trying to do the same thing that Lewis and Clark did 50 years later find away across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. Of course the Louisiana Purchase made the claim null but having never heard of the trip I was impressed the french made it that far west and south.
