Day 15 Sept 11 ( and I am sticking with it)
Apparently I can’t count (what do you expect from an Old Canadian Enginneer), on plan we are day 17 and my log showed 2 day 12 s. I have tried to fix this once before but this time I will ignore and try to do better in the future.
Today’s weather was almost comfortable, Sunny but at speed we needed jackets.
Left Pierre and crossed over to Fort Pierce, picked SD 1806 and rode that through Lower Brule (an Siox Reservation town) and on to Fort Thompson. It was fast ride with light traffic outside of the towns.
Fort Thompson started off as an Army base then was. converted to. a Crow Indian reservation. The Nation which was mainly women and children were forced to relocate here during a drought in 1863 . They suffered a significant amount of death and suffering as food aid arrived too late and was badly spoiled in the first year, The Sioux reservation for the Lakota Sioux is across the river. The French (who arrived here first per yesterday’s blog) called them Burlee which meant burnt. That is where the name of the area and reservation came from. Both of these towns were relocated when the Big Bend Dam was build as the land was flooded over.
Other Notes:
- Big Bend created Lake Sharpe the largest pool on the Missouri River
- Saw 2 herds of Buffalo (Bison is more correct name) today
- Saw 5 deers running across the road
- There was really neat Old church in the middle or no where that we passed today
- Had to stop to find and replace bolt that fell off Dianne fender today. Gave the Gas station attendant that helps us $20 for what was really 5 minutes of work and 50 cent bolt. I was pleased to do it as it would have taken me a lot longer.
- Saw Three huge fields of Amaranth (Pigweed) an original Native American crop today. Saw more of that than corn or Soya.

Thanks I am trying I hope the spelling and grammer are too bad.
