Day 16 Sept 12
i was almost comfortable today when the sun was shining and just a little chilly when it became cloudy.
We left Fort Thompson and rode to the city of Chamberlain where we stopped and went to the Akta and Lakota museum. It was great the history was presented in factual and easy to understand fashion. The displays also did a great job explaining the life style and culture of the tribes.
Then we took off for our final stop in Bonesteel SD. It is a really happening time in 1902 there was a battle her during the land draw for home settlers. The town that had a population of 700 was had 4000 people arrive for the drawing and troop of more profit seeking people that terrorized the locals for money. Then the police force had to chased them out of town.
Today Bonesteel has a population of 194, a restaurant that closes at 2 pm before dinner. So we had to buy some sandwiches that we fixed up from the local grocery store.
Other notes:
- Scenic view of the Missouri river are great
- The land is getting flatter and there are more trees
- Saw 2 more deer today
- It is common to see old homesteads with bunches of old vehicles around them
- Lots of the ranches put out old farm equipment at their gates to mark the road in. I worry it is to remind them where they live when they come home
- Dianne rode 4 miles of gravel and did not complain once. Then she refused to ride a second 1 mile stretch and we had to do a work around that added 1.5 miles to the day.
- The total ride today was 106 miles. Around the towns we saw a lot of cars but when on the bike trail we saw only 10 cars in 80 miles.
