Day 9 Sep. 4

We had two perfect days to ride scooters, yesterday was prefectly comfortable and today was perfectly miserable.  We expected a little rain but the heavy rain we had, I had my shell over my wool coat.  The shell soaked through in the first half hour and wool coat in about 30 minutes later.  Then the temperature dropped to 60 and we decided to bail out at Winnet instead of doing another 76 miles.  We were frozen and wet.  We will pick the trail up in the morning but it was good decision as water was not only leaking through my shell but into the packs.

Got a room and started drying all our stuff as soon as possible my guess is after 6 hours we are about half done.  My wool coat won’t dry out for day as I am still squeezing water out of the sleeves.  While the stuff was drying out and were warming up we watched a moving on Plex and continued to dry my stocking by wearing them.  Currently my feet are wet but that was caused by putting on wet socks to go to dinner.

Winnet is small town only 185 people in the 2020 census.  The one Bar and Grill is open from 10 AM to 2.  So I thought we were in trouble for dinner until I realized it 2 AM.  The town was founded by a John Winnet from of all places Toronto Ontario Canada.  He wanted to experience Indian land and became a sharp shooter and game hunter for the ranchers.  He was captured by Native American Natives and called Eagle Eye. Later released and turned into a rancher and freight hauler into the area.  There was fort build about 7 miles from here in the 1870 to chase off first peoples and buffalo so cattle men could have free space.  Apparently rustlers were common and often hung to tame the country.

Dinner was interesting the table behind us discussed cattle, goats, hay and blowing up a beaver dam with 500 lbs of dynamite.  The quantity used was determined by, “a Court order to get rid of more than 700 lbs of explosives”. Any way no one was killed and it put the road under 7 ft of water for a day or so.  The beavers have come back though but they guess it will take a couple of years to get dam rebuild to the same level.

Other notes:]

  • Saw one sign today on private property that said, “God Bless Joe Biden”.  Not sure the owner is popular in these parts.
    • I Knew we were in the wrong spot to declare any support for liberal causes when in the restaurant there was sign that said “Trump 2024 NO MORE BULLSHIT”
    • Nest I see a forecast that claims 40% chance of rain with 0.03 inches to fall I will stay inside
