Today I was comfortable the whole ride as zipped the jacket up and that keep the morning breeze down. So even through it was only 57 starting out I was happy. See even Old Canadian Males can learn to dress warm.
We extended our ride today as we finished before noon. Tomorrow we head to Sioux City Iowa where there is a lot to see, and in Springfield there was only one small bar and grill and tiny hotel room. So we moved out to Yankton a larger town. We were still so early that they would not let us check into the room. So we killed some time having a DQ ice cream and walking the river front park trail. This resulted in a total ride of 103 miles on .9 gallons of gas so better than 100 miles per gallon.
The Scenery was good but the roads where straight and mostly flat so I did what I do when bored and counted a lot stuff so see notes.
The first point of interest was the Fort Randals Dam. Turns out Fort Randals was “Indian Agent depot” and where Crazy Horse was locked up for 2 years after the battle of the Little Big Horn. Across the river from the location of the fort (only the chapel is left of the fort) is the town of Pickstown SD. It even had a golf course. What has become clear is close to these dam and where there are good roads and views big home are being build overlooking the Missouri River. Just after Pickstown came the Randals Casino and Hotel. It was huge and looked to some what busy. Pickstown is noted by Lewis & Clark as the place where they first tried to catch a prairie dog, which they called a barking squirrel. They tried to dig up a borrow and went down 6 feet dropped a 12 foot pole and and still did not touch bottom so they gave up.
Next came Springfield where we planned to stop but as above it was early entering the town we saw a flock of wild turkeys, the second flock we have seen on this trip.
Then we arrived in Yankton. It was originally the capital of the Dakotas and was the busies port for steamers on the Missouri River. Currently navigation past Sioux City is not possible due to the dams without locks. Yankton also has the Mead Museum, it is a resorted insane asylum for women.
